nglish settlers are
sailing across the Atlantic, where a "New World" awaits them. Most
of these men are honest British yeomen looking for a better life,
but their leader, Governor Ratcliffe, is a haughty and rapacious
blackguard who sees the New World only in terms of the promise of
riches -- riches he can take.
As soon as they arrive, he urges his men to tear up the wilderness
in search of mineral wealth. A caricature of the colonizer as
blatant exploiter, he quickly distrusts the Native Americans. He
sends his bravest man, John Smith, into the woods to scare them
away -- or to kill them, if necessary. All this in the name of
Indian gold. |

Ratcliffe is not an out-and-out evil villain. But he is an
unpleasant, greedy guy who sees the colonies as nothing more than
an opportunity to make a fast buck.
