Anne — A vivacious woman of forty; second-in-command of the Resistance. She has the ability to see through demon illusions-among other powers.

 

Archimedes — Greek mathematician, physicist, and inventor; Bartimaeus claims to have known the ancient scholar.

 

The Bearded Mercenary — Simon Lovelace's hired assassin who evaded capture for stealing the Amulet of Samarkand; also proved to be involved in the golem conspiracy and the demon revolt. [pg. 250, 267]

 

The Benefactor — A former magician and leading member of Society, who misleads the Resistance into believing that he is a sympathizer seeking to overthrow the magician rulers. His true identity is unknown. Borgias, The-Spanish-Italian noble family whose reputation was synonymous with greed and betrayal; one of the family's instruments of death was used against Kitty by the mysterious Benefactor.

 

Brahe, Tycho — Magician, astronomer, and gambler whose nose was cut off by a lucky stroke during a duel over a woman. Bartimaeus considers him the least offensive of his masters.

 

Burke, Mr. — A disgruntled magician involved in a conspiracy against the government.

 

Button, Harold — A magician, scholar, book collector, and incurable eccentric. Kitty Jones worked as his assistant.

 

Cathcart, Amanda — The owner of Heddleham Hall estate, the location of the Annual Parliamentary Conference and Winter Ball; she was a commoner betrayed by Simon Lovelace.
