"Holes" "Holes"

Director Andy Davis, whose forte is making thrillers ("The Fugitive," "A Perfect Murder"), thought it high time he brought a film to the screen for younger audiences. He found his project with "Holes," a new Walt Disney Pictures movie. Based on the 1999 Newbery Medal-winning novel by Louis Sachar, the movie offers "a very layered, complicated puzzle piece that kids like," says Davis, along with "a beautiful humanism."

The film follows Stanley Yelnats, played by "Even Stevens" Shia LaBeouf, a shy teen who is wrongly convicted of stealing cleats. While serving his sentence at a detention center, Stanley changes from a weakling into a self-assured young man.

Davis credits a stellar cast -- which includes Sigourney Weaver, as a warden with a hidden agenda, and Jon Voight, as a deranged guard who ensures that the kids dig their five-foot holes each day -- with making this "one of the best experiences I have had as a filmmaker." Recalls Davis, "Jon was never out of character. He's scary and wonderful."

"Holes," which also stars Henry Winkler, Patricia Arquette, and Eartha Kitt, opens April 18.
