Snow White Turns 70
In 1937, movies cost a dime and the country was in the depths of the Great Depression. Radio was an exciting new phenomenon, while TV was hardly a gleam on the horizon. And a young princess was about to sing her way into the hearts of America.
Looking back now, 70 years later, it's easy to forget what an astonishing achievement Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" really is. The first animated feature in movie history, it is also one of the most beautifully achieved -- and the most beloved. With "Snow White" having just celebrated its 70th anniversary in December, we thought it was time to take a look back at some lesser-known aspects of this landmark film.
"Snow White" launched Disney as THE house of animation, and began a legendary string of animated classics. However, it came perilously close to not being made at all! DAVE'S ANSWER
The beautiful Cinderella mosaics were designed by Disney artist Dorothea Redmond and crafted by famed mosaicist Hanns-Joachim Scharff. No one has counted the pieces of Italian glass -- a press release says "hundreds of thousands." Some were fused with silver and 14-carat gold. The smallest pieces were the size of the head of a tack.
