YOUR QUESTION
After watching "The Wizard of Oz" for the 15th time with my 3 year old, I was wondering what Walt thought about the picture. After all, it was made directly as a result of the fervor around "Snow White," which was released a year earlier.

DAVE'S ANSWER
Walt was intrigued with the Oz stories, first inquiring about their copyright status in 1937, even before MGM had begun production on their film. I have never seen any comments by Walt on the MGM film, but in 1954, Disney bought the film rights to 11 of the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum, and soon announced plans for a film to be called "The Rainbow Road to Oz." Other than a couple of production numbers on the Disney TV show, the film was never made. It wasn't until 1985 that we finally took advantage of our rights ownership and made "Return to Oz."
