Making "The Jungle Book" Swing

Like Rodgers & Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe, Robert and Richard Sherman are one of the great American songwriting duos, with a parade of memorable hits penned for Disney. Sherman brothers' songs like "A Spoonful of Sugar," "It's a Small World," and "I Wanna Be Like You" have had audiences tapping their toes and singing along for decades.

Now, with "The Jungle Book" being released on DVD in a deluxe 40th Anniversary Platinum Edition on October 2, those classic Sherman brothers songs sound better than ever! Richard Sherman shared with us his memories of Walt Disney, the making of the film, and just how wild Louis Prima and his band got while recording "I Wanna Be Like You."

ASK DAVE
YOUR QUESTION
I don't know what other schools did during lunch on rainy days, but at Betsy Ross we went into the cafeteria and watched movies. There was one movie that I absolutely loved, but I don't remember the name. It was narrated by Jiminy Cricket, he sang the "Encyclopedia Song" and talked about different types of music. I also remember that there were some cavemen that were used as "drums" -- one of them had a huge belly and made a very deep sound. Does any of this ring a bell?

DAVE'S ANSWER
I think you may be confusing a couple of films. "Encyclopedia" was a series of short educational films starring Jiminy Cricket that first aired on "The Mickey Mouse Club" in the mid-1950s. "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" was a cartoon showing the evolution of musical instruments beginning with the cave dwellers.
