A Haunting History of Disney Halloween Treats
Maybe it's because Walt Disney never lost touch with his own inner child, but Halloween -- a favorite holiday for many kids -- and Disney seem like a natural fit. On this Halloween, we thought it would be fun to look at Disney films to rent (or own) for a delightful Halloween evening -- from the first Mickey shorts all the way to "The Haunted Mansion" and the Halloweentown series. If you're looking for some slightly spooky (but family-friendly) viewing for the holiday, we've got more than 70 years of shivers up our sleeves.
THE SHORTS
Disney was madly prolific in the '30s and '40s, turning out funny, high-energy shorts on a variety of subjects as quickly as artists could draw them. So it's no surprise that some haunted house and other mildly spooky themes were among them.

How did the animators come up with the look of Jiminy Cricket? An insect seems like a hard choice to make into a sympathetic character!

DAVE'S ANSWER
There was a cricket in Collodi's original Pinocchio story, but he had only a minor role. Walt felt Pinocchio needed a conscience, and had Ward Kimball work on the character. Ward recalled that Jiminy "started out as a pretty ugly-looking insect from which all the somewhat grotesque insect appendages and characteristics ultimately had to be eliminated."
