YOUR QUESTION
How did the animators come up with the look of Jiminy Cricket? An insect seems like a hard choice to make into a sympathetic character!

DAVE'S ANSWER
There was a cricket in Collodi's original Pinocchio story, but he had only a minor role. Walt felt Pinocchio needed a conscience, and had Ward Kimball work on the character. Ward recalled that Jiminy "started out as a pretty ugly-looking insect from which all the somewhat grotesque insect appendages and characteristics ultimately had to be eliminated."
