Q1 What are "plug-ins," and which ones do I need to enjoy Disney.com?

Check out our Internet Tools section to learn about helper applications and plug-ins used on Disney.com.

Q2 I downloaded a file, but it won't play. What can I do?

Make sure you have any plug-ins necessary to view or play the file. Click here to visit our Software Center for more information on downloading plug-ins and other technical questions about Disney.com. In some cases, you'll have to link to another company's Web site in order to download or update a plug-in.

Q3 I'm an AOL member, and I'm having trouble accessing features on Disney.com. What can I do?

In order to fully enjoy Disney.com, we recommend using America Online software version 5.0. To find out which version you are using, open AOL. On a PC, click on "Help" in the AOL toolbar and select "About America Online." On a Mac, click on the Apple icon and select "About America Online." To upgrade, sign onto AOL and go to keyword "Upgrade."

If you are using an older version of AOL, download and install Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. After installation, restart your computer. Open AOL and sign on. Click on the AOL icon in the top left-hand corner and select "Minimize" (on a PC), or select the AOL icon in the top right-hand corner and select "Hide America Online" (on a Mac). Finally, open Navigator or Explorer and return to our site.

Q4 How can I speed up my browser?

The speed at which images appear, movies and sounds download, and you move around the Web depends on several things: Your modem speed, your server connection, the number of people on the Web ("traffic"), the kind of computer you're using, and other factors. There are a few basic things you can do to speed up the action:

  1. Close all applications except the browser you're using.

  2. Keep only one browser window open at a time.

  3. Surf the Web during low-traffic times, like Saturday and Sunday.

  4. Some browsers are faster than others. Experiment with different browsers to find a faster one.

  5. Allocate more memory to your browser.

  6. Use a higher-speed modem.

Q5 What is "downloading," and how do I do it?

Downloading is the process of copying something off the Web and putting it on your computer (specifically, on your hard drive). Either a clickable button or a text link gives you access to the downloadable material. To download a sound or piece of music, click the button or hyperlink (colored text) that initiates the download.

If you haven't installed the application needed to hear a sound, the "Unknown File Type" box appears, offering several options. Click "Save File to Disk" to save the sound or music to your computer's hard drive, then go to Internet Tools to learn how to get the application you need to listen to your downloaded sound or piece of music. If you have the application needed to listen to the sound on your computer, the "Viewing Location" box appears and the sound begins downloading. If you need help listening to the sound after it has finished downloading, consult the Listening to Sounds and Music section.

Q6 Why is my downloading process quitting in the middle?

There are several possible reasons: Your server went down in the middle of the download, the server timed out, your hard drive is too full to store the download, communications between your machine and Disney.com were interrupted, or your machine didn't have enough memory available to continue the download to the end. Try downloading the sound again at another time.

Q7 Why did my download get all the way through, then quit at the end?

It's probably because your computer requires that you install the needed player software before you download the sound. See Listening to Sounds and Music for more information about how to listen to downloaded sounds, or see Internet Tools for information about how to get the software you need onto your machine. If you're getting an error message at the end of your download, take a look at the Error Messages section for an explanation of common error messages and how to solve the problems that cause them.

Q8 Nothing happens when I try to download. What's wrong?

Several things may be causing this problem. Try these possible solutions:

Make sure you're clicking on a piece of art or text that is intended to initiate downloading.

On some computers, downloading occurs with no "status box" or notification of any kind that the downloading is actually happening. Try downloading, wait for a while, then check your hard drive or desktop for the downloaded file.

Q9 I downloaded a sound, but I can't find it on my computer. Where is it?

Most computers automatically download to your desktop or hard drive. If you can't find the file:

Look for the file in the Netscape folder on your hard drive. If your computer is a PC, use the File Search feature of Windows File Manager (Windows 3.1) or the Find Files feature of Windows 95 to find the file.

If your computer is a Mac, use the Find Files utility in the Apple menu.

Q10 How do I listen to a downloaded sound?

To be able to listen to sound files downloaded from Disney.com pages, you need to download a helper application from our Internet Tools page.

To play a sound:

  1. Start up your sound-playing application.

  2. Choose Open from the File menu.

  3. Double-click the sound file that you want to play. The sound may automatically begin playing.

  4. If the sound doesn't automatically start, click the "Play" button on the sound player.

You should now be able to hear the sound or piece of music. If you don't, try some of the tips under the next section, "I can't hear a sound when I click the 'Play' button on my sound player."

Q11 I can't hear a sound when I click the "Play" button on my sound player.

This may happen for a number of reasons. Try the following:

Check your volume. If it's on, try turning it up. If you have external speakers, make sure the speakers are plugged in and turned on, and that their volume is turned up. Check your computer's sound control. Make sure it's on, that the volume is turned up, and that the speakers are chosen as the sound output source. Some older computers don't come with sound cards. You may need to have one installed.
