At age ten, Russell made his film debut in the Elvis Presley film "It Happened at the World's Fair," marking the beginning of a forty-three-year career. He starred in his own western series, "The Travels of Jamie McPheeters," and appeared in ten Disney movies, among them "Follow Me, Boys!," "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes," "The Barefoot Executive," and "The Strongest Man in the World." He also starred in several episodes of "The Wonderful World of Disney." In 1979 he was cast as Elvis in director John Carpenter's biopic for ABC and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance. Russell later re-teamed with Carpenter on four films: "Escape from New York," "The Thing," "Big Trouble in Little China," and "Escape from L.A.," which he also co-wrote and co-produced.
