During a face off, the referee drops the puck between the sticks of two opposing players who battle for possession.& &term8=Goal& &def8=When a player shoots the puck past the goalie and into the opposing teams net.& &term9=Hat Trick& &def9=When a player scores three goals in a single game.& &term10=Icing& &def10=Occurs when a player shoots the puck past the opponent's goal line from beyond the center red line. This is enforced only when the opponent is the first to touch the puck after it passes the goal line. An icing call results in a face off in the offending team's defensive zone.& &term11=Off-sides& &def11=When a player crosses the opponents blue line before the puck enters the attack zone. The puck must always precede the player into the opponent's end of the ice. An off-sides call results in a face off in the neutral zone. &term12=On the Tape& &def12=Slang for a perfect pass. When a player passes the puck directly to the tape on his teammates stick.& &term13=Penalty Box& &def13=The designated area where players serve their penalty time. This is a small bench located behind the boards.& &term14=Poke Check& &def14=An attempt to steal the puck by poking at the opponents stick.& &term15=Power Play& &def15=The man advantage one team has over the other following a penalty. When a player commits a penalty, he is sent to the penalty box for a minimum of two minutes. During that time his team is minus one player on the ice, creating a five-on-four, or possibly even a five-on-three situation. The team on the power play has the advantage of having one more man on the ice.& &term16=Red Line& &def16=The red line at the center of the ice that divides the rink in half. Opening face offs occur at the red line.& &term17=Slap Shot& &def17=A powerful shot on goal that can reach speeds above 100mph. The velocity is achieved when the player swings his stick backwards and then towards the puck in a motion similar to a golf swing.& &term18=Sweater& &def18=Refers to a player's jersey.& &term19=Two-Line Pass& &def19=Similar to off-sides, when a player passes the puck from his defensive zone to a player beyond the red line. A puck that passes unimpeded from player to player over both the blue line and the red line results in a two-line pass call. A two-line pass call results in a face off in the defensive zone.& &term20=Wrist Shot& &def20=A weak shot made by flicking the wrist of the stick hand toward the goal.& &term21=The Stanley Cup& &def21=The most prestigious trophy in hockey. Awarded to the team that wins the NHL playoffs. Each member of the winning team has his name permanently etched onto the Cup.&
