Roz -- Bob Peterson

BOB PETERSON (Story Supervisor/Voice of Roz) first came to Pixar in 1994, where his assignments have included directing several commercials for the shorts department and a stint as an animator (working mostly on bad kid Sid) and layout artist on "Toy Story." He went on to become a story artist on "A Bug's Life" before assuming his story supervisor role on "Monsters, Inc."

Peterson explains, "Roz is a middle-aged slug-woman who slides into the room and sucks all the energy out of it. Her big thing is paperwork and if you don't file it, you're in big trouble. At first, I was just doing her voice as a scratch track and I tried to do her as deadpan as possible. They pitched me up electronically to make it sound a little bit more like a woman. They did recordings with some real actresses but Pete and the others just weren't laughing as much.

"I just heard this voice in my head and thought I'd give it a try," he recalls. "Basically, I was trying to sound like the trees in 'The Wizard of Oz' when they say 'Don't touch those apples.' But then I would end each sentence with what I call the Archie Bunker dismount where you take a breath at the end. 'Uh, Mr. Sulivannnneeeehhhh.' That gave it a real sense of fun."

Born in Wooster, Ohio and raised in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York, Peterson received a degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio Northern University. At Purdue University, while pursuing a master's degree in engineering, he had his first experience working in a computer graphics lab. During this time, he also began writing and drawing a daily four-panel cartoon strip called "Loco-motives" for the daily local paper. Following graduation, Peterson moved to Santa Barbara, California to work for Wavefront Technologies, where he taught people how to use such computer software as Maya. This was followed by a stint in production with the Hollywood-based Company, Rezn8 Productions.

Peterson and his wife have one daughter and a son. He is currently working as co-screenwriter (along with Andrew Stanton) on the upcoming Disney/Pixar feature, "Finding Nemo." Peterson's previous voiceover work includes the Pixar short film, "Geri's Game," for which he provided the cackles for the title character.
