Biography of Maureen McGovern

Maureen McGovern is featured on Take My Hand: Songs from the 100 Acre Wood, performing "Little Black Rain Cloud/Sunny Skies." With more than 30 years of recording experience, McGovern has performed on Broadway, as well as in television shows, feature films, and radio programs.
Maureen's latest album is Out of This World: McGovern Sings Arlen, a tribute to the music of Harold Arlen, released by Sterling Records. She also writes children's songs for Scholastic Inc., including the current educational book/cassette release "I Want to Learn to Fly." Among her future recording projects is an homage to Alan and Marilyn Bergman and their many musical collaborators -- such as Michel Legrand, Dori Caymmi, and Sergio Mendes -- which will include songs with a Brazilian flavor. The album is due next spring.
McGovern's soundtrack recording career began in the 1970s with the No. 1 chart-topping gold record "The Morning After," the Academy Award®-winning song from The Poseidon Adventure. She recorded another Oscar®-winner, "We May Never Love Like This Again," for The Towering Inferno, in which she made a cameo performance. Other hit records include "Can You Read My Mind," from the motion pictures Superman and Different, and the theme from the ABC television series "Angie." She also appeared in the motion picture Airplane! as the guitar-strumming nun.
During the late '80s and early '90s, McGovern returned to the studio and recorded five albums: Another Woman in Love, State of the Heart, Naughty Baby, Christmas with Maureen McGovern, and Baby I'm Yours, featuring baby boomer favorites from 1955 to 1970.
McGovern has appeared on several recordings, including duets with Placido Domingo, A Love Until the End of Time, Bernstein's Glitter and Be Gay, and Faure's Pavane. She also recorded four songs composed and written by David Shire for his album David Shire at the Movies.
McGovern starred in the PBS/BBC Emmy Award®-winning special "Celebrating Gershwin," a tribute that marked the 50th anniversary of the composer's death. She also starred in the revivals of CBS Masterworks recordings of "Of Thee I Sing" and "Let 'Em Eat Cake."
McGovern also starred in her own PBS Special, "Maureen McGovern: Live at Wolftrap," and guest-starred in "Sentimental Swing -- A Tribute to the Music of Tommy Dorsey," hosted by Mel Torme. She has been a guest artist with symphonies across the country, including the Boston Pops, New York Pops, and the National Symphony. McGovern also has regularly appeared on Garrison Keillor's live radio broadcast, "The American Radio Company," on National Public Radio.
