Debi Barrett-Hayes Debi Barrett-Hayes
Florida State University School
Tallahassee, FL

Seen as an educational pioneer, Debi's classroom emerges wherever she and the students gather and learning occurs. This may be in a garden, a museum, a graveyard, the State Capitol Rotunda, in front of the war memorial or even on a long distance bus. Beyond the confines of the classroom, she brings history, science and culture to life through participation in the visual arts across subjects and grade levels. Collaborating with other teachers and community resources, Debi aids her students in creating art throughout their campus and city, including an environmental installation in the local library entitled, "On the Edge."

"Mrs. Barrett-Hayes has a knack for bringing out hidden talents. Students at all levels are accomplishing great things as a result of Debi's art program."

- Jesse L. Jackson, Principal, Florida State University School

"Mrs. B. is a miracle to the artistically handicapped by opening doors to alleviate one's vision to see blindly. Simply put, we see our own colors through her."

- Yun Bai, Former Student
