Middle School Sciences
Beth Cook-Vernon
Brittany Hills Middle School
Blue Springs, MO
As a teacher, Beth sees herself as a compilation of Diane Sawyer, Oprah, Ms. Fizzle and Jewel. As Diane Sawyer, she seeks to provide students information that is current and informative. The Oprah in her tries to inspire students to become lifelong learners by realizing that science plays a role in living the best life possible. Ms. Fizzle from The Magic School Bus takes them on an exciting educational journey, and Jewel knows the power of music as a communication tool.
" 'I finally know what I'm doing in science!' I hear students saying. 'I wonder what she's going to do today?' Not only those kids who looked for something to learn, but also those who came in not wanting to learn, soon became excited about science. Maybe it is her music that first draws students to Ms. Cook, but it is her imagination and devotion to learning that keeps them coming back for more."
- Megan Clark, former student, Brittany Hills Middle School
