Environmentality: Conservation Outreach & Education: 2002 Winners

In Florida

Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge in Florida... Mrs. Marguerite Kling's class from Suncoast Elementary in Spring Hill, Florida, celebrated their accomplishments at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The students developed the project "The Problem: Nonpoint Source Pollution, The Solution: You!" to educate their peers and community about the importance of water quality and nonpoint source pollution. The students also coordinated a Valentine's Day fundraiser and raised $270, which they donated to the Everglades Foundation.

Our 2002 winners in Mrs. Marguerite Kling's class from Suncoast Elementary in Spring Hill, Florida, focused their efforts on water quality by presenting puppet shows to very young students, teaching older students to create their own watersheds, and raising money for the Everglades Foundation. They had the opportunity to meet and be recognized by Roy E. Disney during their field trip in May.

In California

Mrs. Stephanie Sparks' class from Miano Elementary school in Los Banos, California, were honored at Disney's California Adventure for winning Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge. The class developed the project "Every Wetland Counts" to educate students and community members about the significance and importance of preserving and protecting wetlands. The students' accomplishments included developing a Web site, stenciling storm drains in local neighborhoods, distributing educational materials to residents, giving a presentation to the city council, and creating posters to promote details about their progress.
