Ask the following questions to help students understand the concept of an "ecological footprint."
- Imagine stepping into sand. What happens to the sand when you press your foot into it?
- What would happen if your foot were bigger?
- What do you think an ecological footprint is? (It is the impact we have on the environment, just like our feet impact the sand.)
Explain that one way to reduce your ecological footprint is to conserve energy, by doing things such as using less electricity and fuel. Ask students to name some ways they can use less electricity and fuel.
