Choosing an Activity
Within Playhouse Disney Online, your child can explore different areas for each of their favorite Playhouse Disney characters, including Rolie Polie Olie, Bear in the Big Blue House, PB&J Otter, and Tony and Viv from Out of the Box!
When you get to the home page for each character you will see pictures that represent all the activities to choose from. Some activities are designed to be more creative or exploratory, while others are more structured, and encourage your child to work toward a goal. In the Rolie Polie Olie section, the music, storybook, stamping, paint ball, and coloring book activities are more exploratory, while the connect the dots, block/puzzle, and clean your room activities set a challenge for your child.
Levels
Some activities contain several levels of increasing complexity and difficulty, in order to support the child's development. The higher levels can be accessed by clicking on the green forward arrow. |
 |
A light bulb meter will also indicate how many levels each activity has, and can be used to jump to different levels. |
 |
A Looping arrow will appear in many activities, and can be clicked on to return you back to the beginning of that activity. |
 |
Clearing and Leaving an Activity
In many activities, such as coloring or stamping, you may want to clear the screen. You can do this by clicking on the picture of the trash can.
|
 |
When you are done with an activity, you can always return to the Home page by clicking on the Home Button.

On television, Playhouse Disney seeks to address the whole child, ensuring that elements across programs cover the several categories of child development. On the Internet, Playhouse Disney Online is able to extend the curriculum into a new medium in order to give the child more opportunities to play and learn. In fact, the more interaction the child has with an adult in playing these activities, the greater the opportunity to learn. Adults are encouraged to participate by stopping to ask questions about things like what the child thinks they should do next and to talk with the child about colors, shapes, numbers, sounds, etc.
Each category of child development contributes to the whole child, and children need all of these areas of growth to reach their full potential. The categories of child development that Playhouse Disney covers on television and online are:
Physical Development - Increasing both fine and gross motor skills, such as hand-eye coordination, dressing oneself, walking, jumping, cutting, connecting dots, moving the mouse, etc.
Emotional Development - Understanding and expressing a range of emotions, such as happiness, fear and confidence
Social Development - Learning to appreciate the social world and one's own place in this world, including such ideas as sharing, taking turns, cooperating and friendship
Cognitive Development - Acquiring a variety of "facts" about the world, including everything from concepts like colors, shapes, and numbers to facts about nature or history
Metacognitive Awareness/"Thinking about Thinking" - Understanding HOW thinking works, including being able to come up with strategies and hypotheses, and solving problems
Creative/Artistic Development - Developing creativity as shown in music, dance, art, song, etc.
Moral, Ethical, Spiritual Development - Differentiating right from wrong; understanding what it means to be a member of a family or a community; developing a sense of wonder
