True-Life Adventures - Beginning
with Seal
Island in 1948, Walt Disney spent over a
decade sending photographers out into the wilds
and producing high quality nature
documentaries, which he called True-Life
Adventures. After making seven featurettes,
Walt felt there was enough public demand to
make the documentaries feature-length, and the
success of the first, "The Living Desert," was
proof to him that there would be acceptance of
the series. In all, there were 13 True-Life
Adventures, and 8 of them won Oscars for Best
Documentary, an unbeaten record for a series.
