Silly Symphonies - With the
success of the
Mickey Mouse cartoons, the Disney Studio
soon moved to diversify its cartoon production
by beginning a series of short cartoons, the Silly
Symphonies, which were not based on a
continuing cast of characters but rather
emphasized musical themes and new characters
created to fit timeless stories, often adaptations
of fairy tales and fables. The elaborate Silly
Symphonies became a training ground for the
animators and other artists who were eventually
to work on the animated features. There were a
total of 75 Silly Symphony cartoons from 1929
to 1939, with Oscar winners each year after the
Motion Picture Academy began honoring
cartoons in 1932.
