Mineral King - Coming out
of his interest in
the wilderness, which had earlier helped inspire
his True-Life Adventures, Walt Disney was
intrigued when the federal government in the
1960s decided to open up development of the
Mineral King Valley near Sequoia National
Park in California's Sierra Nevadas. He
envisioned a topflight ski resort, which would
blend in with the natural surroundings. However,
some environmentalists, fearful of a "Disneyland"
in the pristine wilderness, fought the plan, and
eventually Congress made the area part of the
national park, stopping any development.
