Matte painting - In order
to increase the
grandeur of his live action films, Walt Disney
hired matte artists to create paintings that would
extend and expand the live action shots. For
example, he could build the drawbridge of a
castle, but the matte artist could paint the upper
part of a huge castle with parapets, towers,
gargoyles, and spires in realistic detail. When
optically combined with the film shot on the set,
it would give the impression that the film crew
was actually filming a full-size castle. Matte
paintings also created the rooftops of London,
colonial towns, and waterfronts filled with old
sailing ships, all of which would have been
difficult or impossible to recreate with a set.
