Mary Poppins - Live-action feature film based on a book by P.L. Travers, with mixed-medium animated segments. "Mary Poppins" is without doubt, one of Walt Disney's greatest personal triumphs. The film was released in 1964 but the project had begun twenty years earlier, when Walt's daughters were reading P. L. Travers' books about the magical nanny and told their father he should turn it into a movie. The film starred Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke as Bert. The original suggestion to cast Julie Andrews to play the inimitable Mary Poppins came from Walt's secretary, Tommie Wilck. When Walt later saw her in a performance of the Broadway show, "Camelot," he knew she was perfect for the film role. The critics agreed. The "Los Angeles Herald Examiner" wrote that "Mary Poppins" was "the most triumphant musical fantasy ever filmed," while "The New York Times" called it a "wonderful cheering movie." "The Chicago Sun-Times" stated that "I guarantee that absolutely everyone is going to be in love with Mary Poppins." The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave it 13 nominations and the picture wound up winning five Oscars®.
