Earle, Eyvind (b. 1916) -
It is not often that
one artist makes such a major contribution to a
Disney animated film project that one can almost
deem it as being in his style, but that happened
with Eyvind Earle and "Sleeping Beauty." Earle
had been a background artist and color stylist at
the Disney Studio since 1951 when Walt,
intrigued by his style of painting, asked him to
design the look for "Sleeping Beauty." Differing
from all who designed previous Disney films,
Earle gave "Sleeping Beauty's" backgrounds and
characters a rigid, stylized look that mirrored
storybook illustrations, resulting in a most
distinctive look.
